PORTAL / ELM (Size X-Z)
An earthy, fluid ring, hand-carved in Elm bark and cast into fully recycled silver using the sand-casting method, then oxidised to emphasise form and texture. The ring shank evolved into a root-like shape through extended heat exposure, allowing the silver to fuse and shift organically—mirroring the slow, powerful growth of roots beneath the earth.
This piece draws from the lore of Elm—a native tree of Moray traditionally associated with the underworld and sacred protection:
~ Divination
~ Life and Death
~ Sacred Protection
~ Doorways to the Otherworld
The process was highly experimental, guided by material response and instinct. The form loops back into itself, symbolising the life–death–life cycle. I think through making—each decision unfolding at the bench—so every piece in the collection is entirely one-of-a-kind.
